New Orleans Refugee Photographer News

Comrades,

The email loop was impossible so I have started this blog so we can communicate contact information from scattered photographers and update each other with information that can help us recover our professions and homes.

Good Luck.

Be sure to leave your name and contact info in your message as a blog does not show that info the way email does.

As everyone is experiencing, communication is eating up time. I'll try to pass these messages around but it would really help if we could turn it into a formal blog. Who of you knows how to set that up? I'll start trying to figure it out.
I heard from Neil Alexander and he stayede and is still shooting in New orleans, his family safe in Massachusetts. You can text message him at 225-603-0931.

What follows are some replies that have come to me

This came to me from a good friend at Canon. Good Luck to all, Jerry
Ward

To Neil Alexander, I wish I was there with you. If possible could you
please
check up on my brother Larry Ward who was last seen at my house at 4530
St
Ann St. He tries to call on the phone, but his phone dies right after
we
pick it up.

Everyone else, please pray for Larry's safety, we do not know where he
is.

Thanks, Jerry

Hi Jerry,

This is some Info I found on the PPA Forum, that it might be useful for
you.

"According to an interview I heard on CNN today with Labor Secretary
Elaine
Chao, "SMALL BUSINESS PERSONS" and "SELF-EMPLOYED" persons should call
1-866-4-USA. Unemployment insurance GRANTS are available for persons
who do
not usually qualify for unemployment insurance. Either call 1-866-4-USA
or
go to the Department of Labor's web site www.dol.gov for more
information.
The live person is available via the phone 24 hours a day, 7 days a
week."

"PPA has just learned that Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi
residents
displaced by Hurricane Katrina may be eligible for Unemployment
Insurance
assistance. Go to the local unemployment office in your temporary city
and
ask to file an "interstate claim" against your state. It is extremely
important to emphasize that you want to file an interstate claim. (If
you do
not specify "interstate claim," the state will only check its records,
where
you won't be listed as a resident, and they will declare you
ineligible.) We
spoke with a representative from the state of Louisiana, who said
displaced
residents from all affected states may file claims in all 50 states,
plus
Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.

Self-employed persons may also be eligible based on state laws. The
local
representative in your temporary city will help make the determination
of
your eligibility.

Please pass this on to all photographers and their employees as they
may be
in dire need of assistance right now. As we learn of other available
assistance we will post the new information immediately in the
Hurricane
Katrina thread on OurPPA.com.

Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with everyone dealing with the
devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina.

Georgia: Call customer service for assistance: 1-877-709-8185. Claim
filing

Alabama: Call 1-866-234-5382 between the hours of 8:00am to 4:30 pm
(Central
Standard Time) Monday through Friday for information and to file new or
additional claims, or to reopen a claim. For speech and hearing
impaired
1-800-499-2035.

Louisiana: Claims must be filed via the internet by going to
www.laworks.net
and selecting "online services" and then "file a UI claim." If you
encounter
problems or need additional information, call 225-342-2840.

Mississippi: Inquires should be made to Georgia Department of Labor's
customer service number for assistance: 1-877-709-8185. A reliable

friend will be acceptable. "

Hope things are getting a little better. Any word about your brother?

Hugs,
Mary

If any of the ASMP fine arts diaspora from New Orleans needs a place to stay and work, we have a guest room here in the San Diego area; and I can offer some reasonable bandwidth, a darkroom, and some equipment. We have space for a couple, probably not children.
